International Overdose / Poisoning Awareness Day
Aug 31st, 2025
International Overdose/Poisoning Awareness Day (IOAD) is a global event that brings communities together to remember the lives lost to the toxic drug crisis, support those grieving, and raise awareness about how we can prevent future harm. At Positive Living North, we are committed to carrying this message forward all year long.
Overdose and drug poisoning affect people from all walks of life, yet stigma and misinformation continue to prevent individuals from accessing the help they need. IOAD is a reminder of the importance of unlearning myths, relearning harm reduction, and building a compassionate community where everyone is treated with dignity.
Through this campaign, we strive to:
- Honour and remember the lives lost to drug poisoning
- Support families, friends, and communities impacted by grief
- Share accurate information about harm reduction, administering naloxone, distributing safe harm reduction supplies, and safe consumption services
- Promote stigma-free language and non-judgmental behaviours so people feel safe reaching out for help
- Work together to address the root causes of substance use, including trauma, homelessness, mental health, and social inequities
Each year, Positive Living North works alongside partners like Moms Stop the Harm and Broken Hearts of Fentanyl to host events that bring the community together, highlight available services, and connect people with resources that save lives.
We invite everyone to take part in this ongoing movement by learning more about harm reduction, supporting those impacted by substance use, and joining us as we work toward a healthier, safer, and more connected community.
Because every life matters.
